By far the highlight of the mix is a new version of the high-end V 17 Nitro (above) that includes an Intel RealSense 3D camera. The depth sensor lets you control games and other supporting apps with hand motions instead of reaching for the trackpad and keyboard. If you’re the creative sort, it’ll also let you scan your face and other 3D objects for inclusion in games or 3D printing projects. But again, you’d think that a higher resolution screen would be included here, based purely on the price alone. Aesthetically speaking, I quite liked the matte feel of it all (despite it being a fingerprint magnet), although its sizeable nature will definitely turn some users away. Personally? Of course, you can’t talk about a laptop without mentioning the all-important trackpad, with Acer’s being pretty large (no surprise, given the size of the device). Our only qualm with the pad was that it took a lot of getting used to, being pretty "spongy" for lack of a better word. But once you learn to touch rather than mash, your experience improves a lot.

I delved into my Steam library and spent half the review period downloading some games to the machine (the wait for full 10Mbps speeds in my neighbourhood continues).

Skyrim ran like a dream on the machine, the game automatically setting all the graphical options on maximum levels. So if you’re looking for a high-end, no-frills gaming experience at 1080p and 60 frames per second, this machine won’t tick all the boxes for the latest games. As for preinstalled bloatware, the Nitro V17 has quite a lot of unnecessary apps, such as McAfee antivirus protection (give me Avast or even Windows Defender), the ABphoto and video suite and a blasted Acer ID popup that refuses to let me tick the "never show this message again" box. Hopefully there’s no Superfish type of malware/adware/bloatware installed here.
Battery life?
You’d think that this gaming laptop would be a real battery killer - and you’d be correct.
A Saturday afternoon of load-shedding was the perfect opportunity to kick off an endurance test, as I played Skyrim. Unfortunately, I had to switch to my personal ultrabook because my play session lasted all of 70 minutes (if that).
I wasn’t expecting a stellar battery life while gaming, as the machine is powering a dedicated graphics card as well, but it definitely fell below my expectations. http://www.want-shopping.com/acer-travelmate-5740-notebook-battery.html Acer TravelMate 5740 Battery Whether it’s because the battery size isn’t up to scratch or because there’s a lack of optimisation, I don’t know, but you’d better keep that charger close by.
As for video playback, we looped a couple of 720p video clips in VLC media player while connected to WiFi, and the battery dropped from roughly 85 percent to zero in about 75 to 80 minutes. So if you plan to watch a movie on a long flight, you’ll want to use the most aggressive power saving modes.
Worth a purchase?
The Acer V17 Nitro Black Edition is certainly a lovely machine, but is it R20 000 lovely? In short, no.
You’re better off paying much less for a desktop machine with better specifications, with gaming laptops in general still being pretty expensive.
But what about those who absolutely must have gaming performance on the go?
Well, the V17’s graphics card making the laptop stand out, although its low RAM count leaves a lot to be desired. Then again, you can upgrade the RAM later down the line (you can’t upgrade the graphics card obviously) so if you must have a gaming laptop, the V17 Nitro Black Edition is well worth considering.
